Fresh baking, stockings filled with candy and big family dinners – there’s no food like food on the holidays. Here are three ways to enjoy Red Deer’s best food this season (plus a sneaky secret treat just for you since you’ve been so good).

EAT

Heritage Ranch is a huge open property just off the QEII with trail rides, meeting and wedding facilities, and the city’s most romantic steak dinner. Over the holidays and into the New Year, the ranch also offers magical winter night light tours.

Cuddle up under a blanket with your sweetie and a hot chocolate for a sleigh ride over sparkling snow-covered paths – under twinkling stars and 20,000 shining holiday lights. The date night package also includes a locally-sourced chef-prepared dinner at the Westlake Grill, wine, chocolates and a long stem rose. Oh Santa baby!

COOK

Buy local for your Christmas dinner this year – farm fresh food is extra tasty, good for the earth and for the local economy. Visit Brown Eggs and Lamb in Bentley – 35 minutes NW of Red Deer, just south of Gull Lake.

Stock up on eggs, dairy and flour for baking, locally grown greenhouse cucs, peppers and tomatoes and the best tasting lamb roast ever, raised right on the farm. Their small country shop also carries beef, bison, elk, pork and whole roasting chickens from neighbouring farms – the store is open everyday until Dec 23 from noon–6 pm and 10 am–noon on Christmas Eve.

During the summer, the farm is part of the central Alberta Country Drive circuit that runs four weekends from June to Sep showcasing the region’s wealth of food, farms, markets, greenhouses, artisans and museums.

GIVE

Fill their stocking with stuffers they’ll love from Candy Bags Sweet Stop – Central Alberta’s largest selection of British imported sweets. Stock up on chocolates, toffees, jellies, bubblegum and 16 flavours of fudge – plus their pre-wrapped stashes of sweets make great teacher gifts and they have lots of party mixes for all that entertaining you are about to do.

BONUS: ONE FOR SANTA, ONE FOR YOU

Dash over to Babycakes Cupcakery for all their new holiday flavours, like eggnog, candy cane, chocolate orange and gingerbread. Now, we could pretend that these moist little cakes piled to the rooftops with heavenly buttercream will last until Santa gets here on Christmas Eve – but really, who are we kidding?
