Adventure for Everyone!

Nature is unpredictable, but that’s what makes it interesting. “My job is never boring,” says Kathryn Huedepohl, Public Programmer at Kerry Wood Nature Centre. “I may be leading a raft tour down the Red Deer River, guiding a nature walk through the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, star gazing at an evening star party, running a preschool nature program, doing paperwork or any number of other things. That’s one of the things I like most about working at a nature centre.”

Located in the heart of the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, Kerry Wood Nature Centre is Red Deer’s year-round home for nature activities and programs. Visitors to the centre can watch for wildlife while exploring the trails, observe birds from behind the bird blind or from the viewing platforms, see educational displays or take part in one of the many nature programs.

Guided river raft tours are one of the most unique adventures offered at the centre and one of the tours Huedepohl enjoys most. “No two floats are the same,” says Huedepohl. “One time we were floating down the river and an osprey dove for a fish right in front of us. It was absolutely spectacular. Another time I had a grandma leap out of the boat to go for a swim in the river. That was also pretty spectacular. I guess people can be as unpredictable as wildlife.”

Diverse Attractions

Where else can you visit a movie star bear, enjoy a carriage ride and get lost in a corn maze all in the same day?

The Red Deer region has some amazing attractions that cannot be found anywhere else. Dog lovers will enjoy a visit to the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail to see how the canine unit is trained. Horse lovers will enjoy a trail ride at Heritage Ranch – right inside the City of Red Deer. Adrenalin junkies will definitely want to attend Skydiving School. Poetry lovers and historians will be fascinated by Stephansson House, the home of Iceland’s greatest poet near the tiny community of Markerville.

There are so many unique attractions in the region that you’ll have to plan your itinerary well. One thing we’re certain of – visiting area attractions is a great way to kickstart your discovery of the Red Deer region.
